Psychometric Assessment Tools

Simmonds International Ltd

More and more companies have realised the importance of finding and keeping their talented staff. In order to achieve this, developing people to their full potential and ensuring opportunities to grow is vital and the use of psychometric tools as part of talent development programmes and retention strategies has soared. MBTI, Firo-B and OPQ are some of the most commonly used tools in this respect.

Where MBTI looks at the whole personality type and its associated preferred behaviours, Firo-B looks at interpersonal behaviour in more detail, specifically in terms of the difference of behaviour that is expressed versus behaviour that is wanted from others. OPQ is most commonly used to help make effective selection decisions and particularly to predict people's effectiveness in various occupational settings.

Myers Briggs Type Indication (MBTI)

The MBTI is designed to identify personality types and have them explain the differences in behaviour resulting from people's inborn tendencies to use their minds in different ways and how this will affect their behaviour in every day life. MBTI is the most widely used instrument for understanding normal personality differences. Because it explains basic patterns in human functioning, the MBTI is used for a wide variety of purposes including:

  • Self understanding and development
  • Career development and exploration
  • Organisational development
  • Team building
  • Management and leadership training
  • Problem solving
  • Relationship counselling
  • Education and curriculum development
  • Training in diversity and multicultural awareness

More than 3.5 million indicators are administered annually worldwide and the MBTI has been translated into more than 30 languages.

Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation Behaviour (Firo-B)

The Firo-B questionnaire is a powerful psychological instrument developed to explain how interpersonal needs affect behaviour and relationships. Originally developed to predict how military personnel would work together in groups, the Firo-B tool yields a measure of what the person expresses to others and what the person wants from others. The Firo-B questionnaire has become a widely used instrument in a variety of applications such as:

  • Raising awareness of typical patterns of behaviour
  • Manage behaviour and its results in both private as well as professional life (both in leadership and in support positions)
  • Recognise the sources of and possible solutions to conflict
  • Understand and acknowledge contributions of all members of a team
  • Increase productivity through awareness of these interpersonal dynamics in the workplace
  • Understand the impact of interpersonal needs on work satisfaction
  • Respond to the needs and styles of others and build more effective and rewarding relationships

Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ)

OPQ is designed to assess the typical or preferred behaviour of individuals in a way that is relevant to their work life. OPQ is based on the definition of personality as that which is concerned with a person's typical or preferred way of behaving.

Researched and developed in early 1980's, OPQ was first introduced in 1984 in the UK and is now used worldwide. Alongside the selection interview, the OPQ can be used in a variety of ways to help make effective selection decisions and particularly to effectively predict people's effectiveness in a number of occupational settings. It can also be used in:

  • Individual development and behaviour change
  • Counselling
  • Team building and development
  • Leadership skills and management development
  • Specific skills development
  • Management of change
  • Career choice and job satisfaction
  • As an input for assessment
